Estrella Hernandez Ortega Obituary

Our mother, Estrella Hernandez Ortega, , age 91, of Trenton, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2023, at Medford Care Center in Medford, New Jersey. Estrella was born on July 1, 1931, to Gregorio Hernadez and Josefa Ortega in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. Estrella met the love of her life Nestor Rivera Torres, and they were blessed with three children, Jesus Manuel. Nydia and Edilberto. They were happily married for 56 years before dad went to the Lord alongside our predeceased older brother, Jesus Manuel, her parents, her brothers Emilio and Rafael, and her sisters, Luisa and Luz Virginia, brothers-in-law Casiano, Edel, Miguel, and Samuel and sisters-in-law, Lucila, Carmen, Eugenia, Gloria, Aida and Carmin.

When we were young the phrase “stay-at-home mom” did not exist, it was usual for a wife to stay at home and raise their children while her husband worked but even with the standards of her era she was an exceptional wife and mother. She cared deeply for her family and neighbors. She and our father Nestor saw this not as an obligation but as a duty that as Christians they had toward others. They were always the first to offer help. All her children’s friends and the neighborhood children always saw her home as a second home and her and our father as an “honorary aunt and uncle” of sorts. A cherished memory of ours is the Three Kings toy giveaway for the kids that lived in our street, our father will buy presents for all the kids and our mother and he will give them out during the yearly Three Kings Street party. She was always very proud of her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren and would not hesitate to let you know about it. She was a lover of the arts, going so far as taking acting classes in her middle age, she especially loved theater plays and of course her tv dramas. She was even an extra on a tv drama named Coralito, which she really enjoyed. Our mother was a brave woman, she was a cancer survivor, and she fought all her life to live with dignity and honor. She always believed that if you put your mind to it you could achieve anything. She always taught us to get an education, explore our talents and hobbies, and supported us all throughout the many accomplishments and difficulties of our lives.

She is survived by her children, Edilberto Rivera and his wife Xiomara Lobo, Nydia Rivera and her husband Edwin Cruz, her grandchildren, Sidnia Soto, E. Yesenia Arzan and her husband Luis Arzan, Edilberto Rivera Jr and his wife Amaryllis Ortiz., Nestor R. Soto and his wife Amy Soto, Jesus Rivera and his wife Beatriz Rivera, and Axel R. Soto, her great-grandchildren, Alejandro Ortiz and his wife Rosa Ortiz, Aleana Rivera and her husband Robert Schauer, Adrian Garro and his wife Cindy Garro, Isaias G. Rivera, Jezmel (Melo) Rivera, Neishaida R. Woods, Luis A. Rivera, Shadaisha N. Woods, Axel J. Soto, Kaitlyn D. Arzan, Nestor G. Soto, Jesus Rivera Jr. and Noah P. Soto, Edilberto Rivera III, Mikayla Rivera, and her great-great-grandchildren Gabriel Garro and Naomi Schauer. She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and many friends.

The family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers. There will be a viewing at Smith Funeral Services LLC on Friday, January 27, 2024, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm and Saturday, January 28, 2023, from 11:00 am-1:00 pm. Diego Vega, Guaynabo, Puerto Rico followed by interment at Cementerio Municipal Guaynabo Viejo, Guaynabo, Puerto Rico.
